Harvest Blend

Harvest Blend
Grape:Madeleine Angevine, Bacchus and ReichensteinerVineyard:Kemps Wines
Dryness:3Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:11%
Despite the moans of some, we thought it really was a barbecue summer. We lost count of the number of evenings we were able to dine on the terrace. The vines liked it too and the grapes ripened beautifully.

Exactly the same grapes, same vineyard, same year as the Estate Reserve but picked a little later in harvest so the acidity has fallen and the wine feels softer in the mouth with hints of apples and pears.

A bit too easy to drink really, but a lovely accompaniment to most food and an excellent summer aperitif. I plan to drink lots of it (responsibly, of course) while feeding the fish in our garden pond.

St. Helena 2008

St. Helena 2008
Grape:ReichensteinerVineyard:Carter's Vineyards
Dryness:3Wine Maker:Mary Mudd
ABV:11%
Colchester was the home of St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great and she is reputed to have introduced Christianity to this country.

St. Helena wine is produced from Reichensteiner grapes grown on a gentle south facing slope overlooking a lake.

This wine is a medium dry white, softer, easy drinking wine and should be slightly chilled for drinking on any social occasion, before or with a meal. It would make a wonderful accompaniment to a summer picnic, a fitting reminder of the beautiful English landscapes of 'Constable's country', which surround the vineyard.

Estate Reserve 2009

Estate Reserve 2009
Grape:Bacchus, Madeleine Angevine, and ReichensteinerVineyard:Kemp's Wines
Dryness:1Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:11.5%
It’s some years since the harvest yielded the right grapes for me to produce an Estate Reserve.

I regard it as my flagship wine. It has everything I am looking for in an English wine. It is fragrant (and might remind you of a spring hedgerow), clean, crisp, and fruity. Grapes are picked on the first day of harvest to ensure a fresh acidity. I think this is up with the best we have made.

I am looking forward to drinking lots with summer salads, fish and barbecued chicken.

Carter's Bacchus 2007

Carter's Bacchus 2007
Grape:BacchusVineyard:Carter's Vineyards
Dryness:1Wine Maker:Mary Mudd
ABV:11%
Carter's premier Dry White Wine made only from the first juice to leave the press. Bacchus is derived from Riesling and Silvaner grape varieties. It is particularly suited to our cooler climate where it ripens slowly and gently during our summer and autumn. This gives wonderful fruit flavours to the wine and the aroma or elderflowers and lemons.

The wine is essentially English in character, dry fresh and fruity. It should be served well chilled with light foods. This wine will keep well for several years. The 1997 Vintage won a Silver Medal in the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Madeleine Angevine

Madeleine Angevine
Grape:Madeleine Angevine Vineyard:Kemp's Wines
Dryness:1Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:11.5%
Despite the moans of some, we thought it really was a barbecue summer. We lost count of the number of evenings we were able to dine on the terrace. The vines liked it too and the grapes ripened beautifully.

Madeleine Angevine is unique. It is the only grape which was developed in this country in the 1950s to suit an average English summer (whatever that may be). This year, the bouquet has a hint of young wood and vanilla and in the mouth, I always detect a hint of lemon. Nevertheless, it is soft and refreshing. It is regularly our best selling wine.

We drink it with almost anything. Especially good with fish, of course.
