Harvest Blend

Harvest Blend
Grape:Madeleine Angevine, Bacchus and ReichensteinerVineyard:Kemps Wines
Dryness:3Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:10.5%

This is a medium dry wine. It is usually one of our most popular products with clean, crisp hints of apples and pears.

What a pig of a year. We approached flowering at the end of June with great anticipation. I had never seen more or better flower buds in my life. All we needed was a dry, warm period for a week or so to let nature take its course. Instead, it rained and it rained. You know the rest. We ended up with one of our smallest harvests although it has to be said the fruit quality was excellent and we put all our grapes into this one wine.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

St. Helena 2007

St. Helena 2007
Grape:ReichensteinerVineyard:Carter's Vineyards
Dryness:3Wine Maker:Mary Mudd
ABV:11%
Colchester was the home of St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great and she is reputed to have introduced Christianity to this country.

St. Helena wine is produced from Reichensteiner grapes grown on a gentle south facing slope overlooking a lake.

This wine is a medium dry white, softer, easy drinking wine and should be slightly chilled for drinking on any social occasion, before or with a meal. It would make a wonderful accompaniment to a summer picnic, a fitting reminder of the beautiful English landscapes of 'Constable's country', which surround the vineyard.

Simply Bacchus

Simply Bacchus
Grape:BacchusVineyard:Kemp's Wines
Dryness:1Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:11.5%
Bacchus is widely regarded as the star performer in the English wine industry and we are extremely pleased with this vintage. We ended up with a good crop of clean grapes with good sugar and acid balance. We pick early to capture slightly higher acidity. This wine has everything I am looking for in English Wine - fragrant with hints of hedgerows, clean, crisp, fruity with a hint of gooseberry and nice and dry.

This is the successor to our Estate Reserve wine.

Carter's premier Dry White Wine made only from the first juice to leave the press. Bacchus is derived from Riesling and Silvaner grape varieties. It is particularly suited to our cooler climate where it ripens slowly and gently during our summer and autumn. This gives wonderful fruit flavours to the wine and the aroma or elderflowers and lemons.

The wine is essentially English in character, dry fresh and fruity. It should be served well chilled with light foods. This wine will keep well for several years. The 1997 Vintage won a Silver Medal in the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Madeleine Angevine

Madeleine Angevine
Grape:Madeleine Angevine Vineyard:Kemp's Wines
Dryness:1Wine Maker:John Kemp
ABV:11%
Madeleine Angevine is the only English grape. It was developed in this country back in the 1950s by an English vigneron called Ray Barrington Brock who died only recently. It is certainly the most reliable grape in the vineyard and seems to shake off problems (like rain during flowering) which would cause problems for other varieties. Madeleine has a slightly citrus quality. There are hints of lemon or grapefruit in the mouth and it is regularly our best selling wine. Specially good with fish, of course.

This wine is the successor to our Echo Point wine.

Carter's Orion 2006

Carter's Orion 2006
Grape:Orion (grown without the use of chemicals)Vineyard:Carter's Vineyards
Dryness:1Wine Maker:Mary Mudd
ABV:11%
"A very special wine" made from the Orion grape. This grape variety ripens well in our cool climate and gives an entirely natural crisp, fruity, dry white wine.

This wine represents all Carter's Vineyards are trying to achieve. The fruit is grown without the use of chemicals and nothing is added to the wine during its production until just the minimum sulphur is added at the end as a preservative. It is just fermented grape juice. A reflection of the sunshine and rain from the year in the vineyard.

Like this wine the ever-popular nursery rhyme 'Twinkle, twinkle little star' originates from Colchester. The words were written by two sisters, Ann and Jane Taylor who lived in West Stockwell Street, Colchester over two hundred years ago.

Orion is a crisp dry white wine with delicious asparagus flavours rather like Sauvignon Blanc. It should be served slightly chilled and can be enjoyed accompanying chicken or fish dishes. This wine will have a long life and could be kept for several years. The 1996 Orion won a Bronze Medal in The 1999 East Anglian Wine of the Year Competition.
