Carter's Vineyards is an enchanting place comprising 40 acres of vines, wild flower meadows, lakes and woodland set in the picturesque Stour Valley.
Carter's Vineyards were first planted in 1990 with further plantings in 1992. The Stour Valley is especially well suited to grape production because of its light, well-drained soil. Several varieties of grape vine are grown to produce a range white, red and rose wines including sparkling ones. The main varieties grown are Bacchus with Pinot Noir also being grown in smaller quantities. The vineyard was among the first in this country to be set up on the New Zealand 'Scott Henry' system of vine trellising.
The wines are made at the vineyard in stainless steel vats using modern equipment. French oak barriques are used to age some of the wines. Carter's Vineyards outstanding flagship wines are Lovejoy, King Coel and Carter's Bacchus, all of which are award winners.
The science of capturing maximum heat and light for the production of ripe fruit is demonstrated at the vineyards. An alternative energy project harnesses wind and solar energy to power the vineyards.
